Lower School - Grades 1-4
Play is a very important part of the Lower School curriculum. On a daily basis, there is guided play and creative play in the classroom, during physical education, and on the playground. All of these opportunities offer many benefits to learning. Play and exploration help children develop cognitive skills such as remembering, problem solving, making decisions, processing information, and learning language. Children also learn fundamental skills in math, science, and social studies. Social and emotional skills are developed, as are physical abilities like large and small motor skills. Young children’s natural curiosity and dynamic imaginations can lead to exciting and meaningful learning opportunities.
STREAM stands for science, technology, robotics, engineering, art and mathematics. STREAM is important because it exists in every part of our lives. Science is everywhere in the world around us. Technology is ubiquitous: SMART watches/phones, virtual assistants, and hands-free driving. Engineering includes the basic designs of roads and bridges, but also tackles the challenges of changing global weather and environmentally-friendly changes to our homes. Mathematics is in every occupation, every activity we do in our lives. STREAM activities provide hands-on and minds-on lessons for the student. Making math and science both fun and interesting helps the student to do much more than just learn.
Our Lower School embraces a philosophy that all children are unique and must have a stimulating educational environment where they can grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. It is our desire to create this type of atmosphere where students can meet their full potential. We provide a safe environment where students are invited to share their ideas and take risks.
The daily schedule includes reading, math, science, social studies, and enrichments. Our enrichments, which are year-long classes, include Foreign Language, PE, Art, Computer, Music , and Library. In the Lower School, we have one-to-one Ipads, which are used to enhance our curriculum and our technology skills. They are also used in many ways with our STREAM activities. The students look forward each year to participating in their class play that all parents are invited to come. They are very proud to be onstage singing and speaking before a live audience.
We look forward to getting to know your family and to watching your children grow!
